| From
1905 until 1953 Daimler were the choice of the Royal
Family and the Landed Gentry both in the United
Kingdom and abroad. It was said that the entire
House of Lords bought Daimlers, people who had become
rich through Industry bought Rolls Royce. This cannot
be substantiated! Until 1933, Daimlers were the
only car manufacturer using sleeve-valve engine
technology. At the end of 1932, Daimler Management
realised that in order to compete with the newly
introduced Rolls Royce Phantom 2, their flagship
Limousines needed more powerful engines. Their Chief
Engineer, Lawrence Pomeroy, designed a new poppet-valve
engine, having 8 in-line cylinders, which was 20%
more powerful than it’s sleeve-valve predecessor.
The new Limousines went into production in 1934.
Our Limousine, 1 of only 136 built, and 8 remaining,
was supplied new to the Borough of Newbury as the
Mayoral Car and was used in the Coronation of King
George VI. It was found derelict in a garden in
Stockton on Tees in 1994 and fully restored by us.
Painted French Navy and Cream, with a blue leather
interior, it has ample room in the rear saloon for
the largest Wedding Dress. The “face”
of this large and rare Daimler is one of it’s
most attractive and often photographed features.
We recommend either our French Navy or Cream DS420
Limousines as accompanying cars where necessary. |
